Design/Build Masonry Competition 2013

As part of the spring semester of the second year at NJIT Architecture Program, the Masonry Design/Build Competition is used to explore the relationship between material, geometry and methods of aggregation.

Using a standard masonry module such as a brick, the exercises focuses on how to manipulate the aggregation of that module to create a wall, whose form is disciplined by the unit of construction that constitutes it. The sculptural result of the wall is understood to be the result of its material and its aggregation proposition.

This build explored how to create an opening as a mechanism for transitioning between two different types of brick patterns in a single wall. The base of the wall starts off as a running bond that turns into a stack bond that is then rotated to create an opening in the wall to allow for light and air penetration.

The goal of the exercise is to have the students understand how to discipline geometry as the way for customizing the spatial and tectonic condition of their proposal.
